Compass Learning

Community Learning

Interest-led, practical learning can help learners build confidence, communication, independence and readiness for increased participation in education, training or employment. Every opportunity begins with the learner's needs and agreed programme outcomes.

The setting serves the learning plan

Community activity is not separate from the learner's programme. Where appropriate, it is mapped to EHCP outcomes, personal development goals, Arts Award or relevant NOCN Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development units. For example, a child may undertake a visit to a farm to partake in animal care as a part of their animal care unit.

Compass has links with a number of suitable delivery partners across Greater Manchester, such as farms, music studios and community kitchens. Our organisation's adaptive nature means we can seek future delivery partners where we do not currently have a suitable local link near a young person's home. All delivery partner locations are visited and fully risk assessed before use.

Practical activities may support routine, responsibility, wellbeing, teamwork and confidence. Where appropriate, they may contribute evidence towards relevant NOCN units. Delivery requires an approved setting, appropriate supervision, welfare procedures, accessibility arrangements and risk controls.

Structured music, media and creative activities may develop communication, self-expression, collaboration and focus. They may support Arts Award or relevant NOCN outcomes where facilities, supervision and assessment arrangements are suitable.

Supported visits, meaningful encounters and practical experiences can connect learning with future pathways and may support communication, teamwork, preparation for work, independence and personal development outcomes.

Every proposed setting is assessed and approved

No student attends a partner setting until Compass has completed and approved a full assessment.
