Psychotherapy alongside education

At Compass, education and emotional wellbeing are supported together. Each young person's plan can include access to psychotherapy alongside their academic and mentoring work, so that wellbeing and learning progress hand in hand.

This combined approach means a young person does not have to wait for one before the other begins. Support and mode of therapy is shaped around the individual, reviewed as their needs change, and always kept proportionate to what is helpful for them.

Support shaped around the young person

The therapist considers each young person's needs before agreeing an appropriate approach. Support may help with difficulties such as anxiety, low mood, emotional regulation, trauma-related difficulties and challenges attending school.

An individual approach

No two young people are the same. The therapist takes time to understand the young person, their circumstances and what they feel ready for, before agreeing how best to support them.

Kept under review

Support is reviewed as needs change and sits within the wider placement plan, so it stays proportionate and connected to the young person's goals.

Therapy approaches

Approaches a therapist may use, depending on the young person's needs and what they feel ready for. Specific therapies are delivered by therapists that are qualified to deliver specific modes:

  • Person-centred counselling
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (always delivered by a therapist specifically qualified in CBT)
  • Integrative therapy
  • Creative therapeutic approaches, such as Art therapy and Play therapy

Qualified, experienced therapists

Support is delivered by trained psychotherapists with a Level 4 qualification or above, relevant experience working with children and young people, and appropriate professional registration or accreditation.

Professional Registration

Our therapists hold recognised professional qualifications and are registered or accredited with relevant professional bodies, including:

  • BACP — British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • UKCP — UK Council for Psychotherapy
  • NCPS — National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society

Registration and accreditation are distinct forms of professional standing; each therapist's individual membership reflects their qualifications and experience.
