Compass Learning

THE COMPASS BRIDGE PROGRAMME

A structured pathway back towards education.

The Compass Bridge Programme provides personalised education, mentoring and specialist intervention for young people who are struggling to access school.

Beginning in an environment where the learner feels able to engage, the programme gradually develops confidence, educational participation and independence, working with schools and families towards sustainable reintegration.

Alternative provision is a bridge, not a destination.

From re-engagement to greater independence.

Progression is guided by the learner's individual needs, readiness and agreed goals, rather than a fixed timetable.

  1. 1

    Home

Establishing relationships, understanding barriers and rebuilding engagement in a familiar environment.

  2. 2

    Community

Developing confidence, social interaction, routines and participation beyond the home.

  3. 3

    School

Gradually reconnecting with the school environment, trusted adults and curriculum learning.

  4. 4

    Independence

Transferring successful strategies to school staff and reducing Compass support as educational engagement becomes more sustainable.

This is an illustrative package, not a fixed offer. Hours, subjects, therapy, activities and delivery settings depend on the young person's needs and the commissioned programme.

An illustrative 12-week pathway.

Weeks 1–2 — Building Trust

Provision begins in a familiar environment, with emphasis on relationships, assessment, establishing routines and understanding the learner's needs.

Intended progress: The learner begins developing a positive relationship with a trusted adult and purposeful educational activity.

Weeks 3–4 — Developing Confidence

Supported community-based activity may be introduced while academic education continues.

Intended progress: The learner begins participating in planned learning or activity outside their familiar environment.

Weeks 5–6 — Reconnecting With School

Where appropriate, initial school contact is introduced through planned meetings, visits or supported learning in an agreed school space.

A formal six-week review informs the next stage.

Intended progress: The school environment begins to feel more familiar and manageable.

Weeks 7–8 — Supported School Access

The learner may begin accessing agreed lessons or learning activities with appropriate Compass support.

Intended progress: Increased engagement within the school environment.

Weeks 9–10 — Transferring Support

Compass and school staff work together to transfer successful strategies, routines and relationships.

Intended progress: Growing confidence and reduced reliance on individual Compass support.

Weeks 11–12 — Independence and Next Steps

The focus is on sustaining engagement, consolidating progress and agreeing appropriate ongoing support.

A further review informs the next stage of reintegration or continued provision.

Intended progress: Greater independence and access to an agreed educational programme.

Reintegration is individual and cannot be guaranteed within a particular timeframe.

One plan. One team. Shared outcomes.

Admission and programme planning take place collaboratively with the young person, family and commissioner. Together, we agree the package, intended outcomes, delivery arrangements and responsibilities.

A named Programme Lead coordinates provision and communication throughout the placement. Formal reviews take place every six weeks, incorporating academic evidence, attendance, engagement and young person and parent/carer voice.
